Enhance Track Sdn Bhd and NanoMalaysia Bhd will commercialise Malaysia's first nanotech wireless mobile phone charger known as METT (Malaysia Energy Transmission Technology) with a sales target of RM1.9 billion in five years.
METT is capable of contactless charging at a distance of several meters for 5V power-based mobile devices and can be used for all types of mobile phones and tablets.
NanoMalaysia chief executive officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said METT has the potential to be used in various sectors of the digital economy and is expected to encourage the development of other related nanotechnology solutions.
“This is in line with the aspirations of Industry 4.0 Malaysia. Wireless chargers are a high-impact innovation that can position Malaysia as a leader in green technology practices in the future," he said.
Launched by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar today, METT is expected to enter the market by mid-2021.
METT will be manufactured in Malaysia with the cooperation of partners who will be identified, said Rezal Khairi. Its production is expected to create 2,800 jobs for those with technical, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) knowledge and skills.
METT, which operates on the radio frequency wave range, consists of transmitter and receiver components. The energy component is expected to be sold at a price between RM300 and RM500 while the delivery component is between RM1,000 and RM2,000.
In his speech, Khairy said the COVID-19 crisis has exposed gaps in the country's technology drivers, and showed that a right investment is needed in the correct areas.
"And if there's been any doubt about that, I think the recent COVID-19 has shown the importance of adopting not only technology, but the right types of technology," he added.
Khairy said via NanoMalaysia, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) is committed to providing support to local high-tech firms such as Enhance Track possessing distruptive technologies from product development phase right up to the commercialisation.
"We should be excited to see a new catalogue of innovation. NanoMalaysia will develop and commercialise under the 12th Malaysia Plan under Mosti’s oversight to further reenergise Malaysia's industry in the direction of becoming a nation that always aims to be at the forefront of technology," he noted.
