Top Countries in Nanotechnology Patents in 2013

Over half of nanotechnology related patents and patent applications in USPTO belonged to the USA in 2013 followed by Japan, South Korea and Germany, according to Statnano.

According to the statistics released by Statnano based on nanotechnology patents and nanotechnology published patent applications, a sum total of 21,379 patents related to nanotechnology have been granted in USPTO in 2013, and about 31,350 nanotechnology patents have been published. A growth of more than 60% is observed in the number of nanotechnology patents in USPTO in comparison with 2012.

By possessing 57% of all nanotechnology patents in USPTO in 2013, the USA has more nanotechnology-related patents than the sum total of all other countries in the world.

Japan, South Korea, Germany, Taiwan, France, China, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada have published higher numbers of nanotechnology patents in USPTO after the USA. Among the top countries in this ranking, Germany, China, United Kingdom, and Switzerland possessed higher ranks in 2013 in comparison with their position in the previous year while Taiwan, the Netherlands and Canada possessed lower ranks. The numbers of nanotechnology patents by United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada are very close to each other, to the extent that these three countries are different in only two patents.

There were 31,353 patent applications in the field of nanotechnology published in USPTO in 2013, which shows a growth of 14.6% in comparison with 2012. The USA ranked first again by possessing 17,177 nanotechnology patents. The share of the USA from all nanotechnology patents published in USPTO is more than 54%.
