Writing in “Nature Physics”, a research team has for the first time directly measured the so-called Kondo effect, which governs the behaviour of magnetic atoms surrounded by a sea of electrons: New observations with a scanning tunnelling microscope reveal the effect in one-dimensional wires floating on graphene.
