This document specifies an oven-drying method for the determination of solids content in paper, board, pulp and cellulosic nanomaterials in solid form, all of which can be produced from virgin and/or recycled.
It is also applicable for determining the dry matter content of paper and cardboard to be recycled.
The method is applicable to paper, board, pulp and cellulosic nanomaterials not containing appreciable amounts of materials other than water volatile at a temperature of 105°C ± 2°C. It is used, for example, in the case of samples of pulp, paper, cardboard and cellulosic nanomaterials taken for chemical and physical analyzes carried out in the laboratory when it is necessary to carry out a simultaneous determination of the content of dry matter.
This method is not applicable for the determination of the dry matter content of a pulp suspension, nor for the determination of the merchantable mass of batches of pulp.
NOTE 1 ISO 638-2 [1] specifies an oven-drying method for determining the solids content in suspensions of cellulosic nanomaterials, ISO 287 [2] specifies the method for determining the moisture content of a batch of paper and board, ISO 4119 [3] specifies the method for determining the pulp concentration of aqueous pulp suspensions, the ISO 801 series [4] specifies the method for determining the mass lot merchant.
NOTE 2 This document is used to determine the total dry matter content of a sample, including any dissolved solids. To obtain the content of cellulosic materials without dissolved solids, the latter are removed before measuring the dry matter content, for example by washing or dialysis, taking care to preserve all the cellulosic materials. When the sample can be filtered without loss of cellulosic solids, ISO 4119 [3] can be used to determine pulp concentration (content of cellulosic materials in solid form).
