ABSTRACT

This standard provides recommendations for determining the number concentration and size distribution of ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols using a differential electrical mobility analysis system (DEMAS). Only the fraction of aerosol particles is considered. For ultrafine aerosols and nanoaerosols, such exposure indicators as the number and surface concentration of particles are significant. This standard also provides recommendations for determining worker exposure to ultrafine nanoaerosols in the workplace. Particular attention is paid to the DEMAS system, the operation of which is based on differential particle mobility analysis, produced by several manufacturers. This standard describes the operating principles of the DEMAS, requirements for aerosol sampling in the workplace, DEMAS calibration, DEMAS maintenance, as well as the uncertainty and presentation of measurement results. Potential problems and limitations that must be considered when conducting measurements to determine compliance with the established limit values of the measurand are described.
