This standard has been developed in response to:

- increasing attention to potential health risks arising from exposure to aerosols containing particles in the nanoscale range (collectively referred to as nanoaerosols, including so-called ultrafine aerosols generated as by-products in various industrial processes);

- the lack of current guidelines and standards applicable to the reduction of health risks;

- the need to develop validated sampling methods as part of the assessment of relevant exposure and monitoring standards
