ABSTRACT

This technical standard describes the quality level testing and measurement for thermal runaway in nanotechnology-enabled electrical energy storage devices. This method, using comparative measurements, allows manufacturers to determine whether nanomaterial additives used in energy storage devices are resilient to thermal runaway. Thermal runaway is known to be caused by low resistance at two or more points within the laminated electrodes, due to additives incorporated into the test specimens. Nanomaterial additives can be mixed with the positive and negative electrodes, electrolytes, and materials coated on the electrodes or separators. This standard includes definitions of terms, test specimens, perforation penetration requirements, test procedures, data analysis, results interpretation methods, and case studies. Due to the complex safety design systems inherent in energy storage devices, this standard is not intended for safety testing of actual products.
