ABSTRACT
This European Standard specifies the use of different parameters to measure inhalation exposure to NOAA in the basic and comprehensive assessment as described in EN 17058 [1]. This document presents the implications of selecting particle measurement parameters to express the inhalation exposure to airborne NOAA, e.g. released from nanomaterials1, and outlines the principles of operation, advantages and disadvantages of different measurement techniques for determining different aerosol parameters. Potential problems and limitations are described and should be considered when future occupational exposure limits are adopted and compliance measurements are performed. The details are mainly given with regard to the following measurement parameters / techniques: - Number / Condensing Particle Meters using optical detection; - Size distribution / differential mobility analysis systems using electric mobility; - Surface / electric charge on the accessible surface of the particles; - Mass / chemical analyzes (eg Induction Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)) on size-separated samples (eg by impactors or diffusion). This document is intended for those responsible for selecting measurement methods for assessing exposure to airborne NOAA.
