ABSTRACT

The standard specifies the methodology for measuring and characterizing the dustiness of bulk materials containing or releasing NOAA, or other respirable particles, under standard and reproducible conditions, using the vortex shaker method. The standard describes the selection of instruments, devices, and procedures for calculating and presenting the results. It also provides guidelines for evaluating and reporting the data. The methodology described in this document allows:
a) the measurement of the mass fraction of respirable dust,
b) the measurement of the dustiness index of respirable particles in the range from approximately 10 nm to approximately 1 µm,
c) the measurement of the emission velocity of respirable particles in the range from approximately 10 nm to approximately 1 µm,
d) the measurement of the particle distribution of the respirable aerosol released in the range from approximately 10 nm to approximately 10 µm,
e) the collection of airborne particles released in the respirable fraction of dust for subsequent observation and analysis by electron microscopy.
The standard is applicable to the analysis of a wide range of materials, including powdered nanomaterials.
