DESCRIPTION

We look forward to meeting you at the Nanomemwater conference to be held at the Swissotel Grand Efes, İzmir on 8-10th October, 2013. Increasing population and improper industrialization practices have resulted in substantial surface and underground water pollution. This phenomenon raises an urgent need for clean, drinking quality water on a worldwide basis. Thus, improvement of clean water production methods is of paramount significance for international organizations, governments and research agencies. Membrane filtration emerged as a promising process to treat (waste) water over the past decade. It offers extra advantages over conventional treatment such as compact module, lower energy consumption, environmental friendliness and the capability of handling wide fluctuations in feed quality. However, the technology entails a number of efficiency in addition to sustainability issues. During the last decades, the performance of membranes and membrane processes has made a major step forward. In recent years functionalization of membranes in water treatment became an increasingly important topic in research and development. Hence in near future membranes will not only be a pyhsical barrier in order to reject contaminants but they will also actively act as functional barrier. This can be accomplished by e.g. supramolecular compounds with anti-fouling properties, nanocatalyst alleviating particular reactions or nanoparticles which can enhance water flow and/or rejection and provide antimicrobial properties. Nanomemwater is held as the summit for the project BioNexGen which is a research project co-financed by the European Commission within the scope of the 7th Framework Programme. BioNexGen is led by an international consortium comprising 11 partners from 8 different countries; the objective is to develop a new class of high efficiency membrane for Membrane Bioreactors to attain sustainable wastewater treatment and reuse in municipal, agricultural and several other industries in Europe, Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Keynote speakers will address critical issues in wastewater treatment and, in addition, the conference will serve as a platform for the partners to convey their experiences, research results, and ideas through podium and poster presentations. Participants include a wide variety of stakeholders from policy, business, science, industrial sectors, retailers and government organizations.
