This standard specifies requirements for an environmental management system that enable an organization to develop and implement an environmental policy and objectives that take into account legal requirements and other requirements to which the organization subscribes. The standard provides information on significant environmental aspects. The standard is applicable to environmental aspects that the organization has identified as those over which it can control and influence. The standard does not establish specific criteria for environmental performance. This standard is intended to be applied by any organization that is interested in:
a) developing, implementing, maintaining and improving an environmental management system;
b) verifying its compliance with its stated environmental policy;
c) demonstrating compliance with this standard through:
1) self-assessment and self-declaration;
2) confirmation of its compliance by parties interested in the organization's activities, such as customers;
3) confirmation of its self-declaration by a party external to the organization;
4) certification/registration of the environmental management system by an external organization.
All requirements of this standard are applicable to any environmental management system. The extent of their application depends on factors such as the organization's environmental policy, the nature of its activities, products, and services, as well as the location and conditions of its operation. This standard also includes guidance on its application. This standard establishes requirements for an environmental management system for the design and development, production, and, where applicable, installation and servicing of nanoproducts.
