This document describes a methodology for measuring and characterizing the dustiness of bulk materials containing or releasing respirable NOAA or other respirable particles, under standard and reproducible conditions, and specifies the vortex mixer method for this purpose. This document specifies the selection of instruments and apparatus and the procedures for calculating and presenting the results. It also provides guidance for the evaluation and reporting of data.
The methodology described in this document allows for:
a) measurement of the mass fraction of respirable dust;
b) measurement of the dust index of respirable particles based on the number in the particle size range from about 10 nm to about 1 µm;
c) measurement of the emission rate of respirable particles based on the number in the particle size range from about 10 nm to about 1 µm;
d) measurement of the particle size distribution of the emitted respirable aerosol based on the number in the particle size range of approximately 10 nm to 10 µm;
e) collection of the emitted airborne particles in the respirable fraction for subsequent observation and analysis by electron microscopy.
This document is applicable to the examination of a wide range of bulk materials, including nanomaterials in powder form.
