The standard specifies the procedures for the determination in the laboratory of the total elemental sulfur and sulfuric semi-sulfur content of cellulose nanocrystals (cellulose nanocrystal CNC) by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and conductivity titration, respectively, including the preparation of the sample, measurement methods and data analysis.
The standard is applicable to the CNC characterization:
a) with all monovalent counterions (particularly hydroxonium and sodium cations);
b) which have never been dried in aqueous suspension or which have been redispersed from a dried form; is
c) which have been extracted from any naturally occurring cellulose source using a range of sulfuric acid hydrolysis conditions or which have been post-hydrolysis sulfated using sulfuric acid.
