In New York City, the World Science Festival will hold an invite-only breakfast featuring a conversation on the important work that the Kavli Prize honors in Astrophysics, Nanoscience, and Neuroscience. The program will accompany a live satellite feed of the award announcement in Oslo, Norway.
This year's keynote speaker for the breakfast will be the Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson,President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and acclaimed theoretical physicist. Among her many groundbreaking achievements, Dr. Jackson is the first African-American woman to have earned a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in any field, the second African-American woman in the United States to earn a doctorate in physics, and the first to be awarded the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest honor for contributions in science and engineering. Dr. Jackson also served as Co-Chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board under President Obama, as well as serving as a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
