ABSTRACT
This document provides a methodology for quantifying the release of nano-objects as powders produced during processing ranging from handling to high energy dispersion. Quantification is carried out by measuring the released aerosols produced by a defined aerosolization procedure. In addition to information in terms of mass, aerosol characterization also covers particle concentrations and particle size distributions. This document also provides information on the factors to consider in the selection of powder sampling methods and processing procedures. It also specifies the minimum requirements for the preparation of test samples, the development of the test protocol, measuring particle release and recording data. In order to characterize the full size range of the particles produced, the measurement of agglomerates and aggregates is recommended. This document does not include the particle size characterization of the powder. Tribological methods are excluded when direct mechanical friction is applied to grind or erode the material.
