This document provides a methodology for the quantification of the release of nano-objects from powders as a result of processing, ranging from handling to high energy dispersion, by measuring the aerosols released after a defined aerosolization procedure. . In addition to information in terms of mass, aerosol characterization relates to particle concentrations and particle size distributions. This document provides information on the factors to consider when selecting from the available methods for powder sampling and processing procedures. It also specifies the minimum requirements for the preparation of test samples, the development of the test protocol, measuring particle release and recording data. In order to characterize the full size range of the particles produced, the measurement of nano-objects, as well as agglomerates and aggregates, is recommended. This document does not include the particle size characterization within the powder. Tribological methods are excluded when direct mechanical friction is applied to grind or erode the material.
